Before you go it alone and begin a renovation project at home, read this

It may be that you think you can’t afford a Montreal general contractor to do the renovations you want on your home. Or it may be that you have always wanted to try your hand at doing your own home renovations. Either way, you’ve decided to go it alone on your next project. Before you start, it’s important to understand that some renovation projects are easier than others, and then there are those that you really don’t want to touch at all.

You can get away with painting a room and making an okay job of it. Professional painters will no doubt laugh at your efforts and the time it takes you to paint a single room, but for visiting friends or family that stay in the guest room you’ve just painted, they’ll likely compliment you on a job well done. The same goes for installing a kitchen or bathroom backsplash, or even perhaps a new wood floor in the master bedroom. All highly doable with the right tools, preparation and attention to detail.

But when it comes to putting it all together...or, more to the point, ripping it all apart and then putting it back together for, say, a complete kitchen, bathroom, or basement renovation—well, perhaps these are projects best left to the professionals. You may think that you will save money by going it alone, but chances are that in the long run you will spend more. Basements in particular can be a dangerous project to undertake alone...or even with your best friend! Basements were never created to be rooms for living in—they were only ever supposed to be storage areas. There are inherent difficulties in working on spaces that are below the earth’s surface—namely moisture and mold. Failure to eradicate either completely from your basement will definitely cause you a costly headache in the future. Upstairs kitchens and bathrooms also have moisture and humidity issues, as well as a whole host of plumbing problems just waiting to trip you up. And again, you don’t want to mess around with plumbing unless you are completely confident. Water makes an awful mess if let loose in your home.

No matter how well you plan a major renovation in your home, you will always meet the unexpected. A professional Montreal general contractor such as Dilamco will have seen and dealt with all the potential pit falls many, many times before. In the long run you will save money and the peace of mind will, of course, be priceless.
