The importance of finding a quality contractor you can trust

It could be that with another child on the way, you need another bedroom. Or maybe you want an additional family room that’s more informal than the lounge you currently have. Either way, you have to choose between buying a larger home or renovating your existing property.

As you like the area and neighbors where you are now, you decide to renovate your home by building a new room above the garage. To get things moving, you settle down in front of the computer to find a Montreal contractor. And within five minutes you notice two things:

1. There are many contractors in your area, from individuals to small, medium and larger companies.
2. Everyone seems to have a nightmare home renovation story to tell

“He was without doubt the worst contractor I have ever come across,” says Simon, who lives in Montreal. “We employed him to finish a room above our garage that had been roughed out (sub-floor and windows) and hidden behind a wall when our home was built. The gentleman we chose sold himself as a general contractor, capable of doing everything that was needed to make our family room a reality. He seemed very nice. In fact, the only thing that is acceptable in our room is the wiring...and the contractor called someone else in to do that. Otherwise, our family room is a disaster area. The arch we wanted as an entrance to the room is off centre (a lot); the mouldings don’t fit properly; the plastering is awful; the railing he installed that separates the room from the staircase is loose. Everything needs to be completely redone.”

Sadly, this story is all too common. There are many contractors in the Montreal region who simply do not have the skills or qualifications required to offer the quality renovations you expect.

When it comes to finding Montreal contractors for your home renovations, it’s important that you align yourself with a reputable company that is Association provinciales des constructeurs d’habitations du Quebec (APCHQ) approved. Remember, to gain certification to Quebec’s association of home builders, a contractor must have a proven track record.
