What you should expect to see from your Montreal general contractor

Isn’t it hard work finding a Montreal general contractor that you can trust these days? The main problem, of course, is that when you need a general contractor, it’s usually because you don’t have either the tools, skills or both to do the renovation job your planning by yourself.

So that means calling in an expert...if you can find one.

There are plenty of general contractors currently advertising their services in the Montreal region, but that doesn’t mean to say that they are all good companies. Many of them may not have the requisite skills required to do a good job of your bathroom or kitchen renovation, or home extension.

So, how do you know if the contractor that shows up to give you a quote for your next project measures up? Here’s what to look for.

Your contractor must know what he or she is talking about, and even if you don’t, you will easily pick up on when your prospective contractor is skating over the facts.

Any contractor that tries to do everything is not a good contractor. No one can be an expert in all the trades at once. A good contractor will have either employees or sub contractors that are expert in the fields required to complete your project

If your contractor says he can renovate your kitchen in three days, show him or her the door. Renovation projects take time to do properly, and one that’s finished in three days is going to end up causing you problems.

Are you being asked to pay everything for the project up front? If so, walk away. This is usually a sign that your contractor doesn’t have a lot of cash flow. This usually means he isn’t very busy, or is a poor contractor...or both!

And if you’re contractor is really, really busy and is trying to book your project for three months down the road, chances are the company is good—go for it!

If the contractor that arrives at your home measures up favorably to most or all of the criteria above, then chances you will be happy with the end result of the project.
